A truly funny and creative oddity, IVANA THE TERRIBLE turns conventional rules on their head and falls somewhere between a comedy and a documentary, flitting between auto-fiction and political commentary. Director Ivana Mladenović plays herself, a Serbian actor living and working in Bucharest. After a series of health issues, she decides to spend the summer on the other side of the Danube in Kladovo, her hometown, where she is awaited not only by her family but also a tense situation that will leave her on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Ivana the Terrible

Ivana invites friends, family and former lovers to play themselves in a scripted version of the story of a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. On the Danube border, drama becomes a comedy.

IVANA THE TERRIBLE challenges the standard expectation of film as a narrative, storytelling format. Instead, the film blurs the lines between cinema verite and fiction by being based on real events and starring the real-life participants instead of actors.

Ivana Mladenović, a director of fiction short films and documentaries, has had her work presented in festivals worldwide, including her fiction feature debut SOLDIERS. STORY FROM FERENTARI that premiered in Toronto IFF in 2017 and in San Sebastian IFF Competition.

This is the result of a personal crisis that lead me in the summer of 2017 back home, on the banks of the Danube, by the Romanian-Serbian border. A process that started almost as a therapy technique became a film. Even in personal history the repetition of a drama can become a farce. In our case, a comedy.
