In Tabu, the world is the cosmos, and it is space and time that mingle to embrace an impossible love hidden for too long - the movie is absolutely unpredictable, delivering wonder after wonder - before a final blossoming. Past and present, Portugal and Africa, slapstick and melodrama, life and death, Man and animals, servants and masters, silence and song are the ingredients of a poem constituted of images and sound, which resuscitates with much melancholia an extinct world, a golden age, a lost paradise.
After studying at the Superior School of Theater and Cinema in Lisbon, Miguel Gomes began his career as a film critic in the daily Pùblico. From 1999, he directed several short films before going on in 2004 with THE FACE YOU DESERVE, story of a thirty-year-old man who refuses to grow up. OUR BELOVED MONTH OF AUGUST (2008), work combining fiction and documentary that depicts the life of a small mountain village. In 2012, TABU, a melancholic poem and tribute to Murnau, wins the Alfred Bauer Prize at the Berlin Film Festival and reveals it internationally. His latest film, in three parts, ARABIAN NIGHTS, tells very freely, in the form of a tale, the years of austerity that have overwhelmed Portugal. The film was selected at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes in 2015.
