A poetic and painterly film that has been described as 'a collage of dreams'. The film was shot without a script, but Garrel had already thought up the eventual title ('the scar inside'). This title was an obsession for him, every shot had to be an expression of 'the scar inside'. Apart from Garrel himself and actor Pierre Clementi, Garrel's former partner Nico, member of the legendary Velvet Underground, played a role in the film. Another important role was for the landscape. Garrel, 23 when he made the film, was compared with Jean Vigo because of his age and talent. La cicatrice intérieure even led Claude Mauriac to call him the Rimbaud of film.

Garrel pares the arid landscapes - scorching or freezing - down to the essential: beauty, purity, but also suffering. With its fake aura of Heroic Fantasy under acid, THE INNER SCAR demonstrates the distress of a generation and the life of a couple stuck between incomprehension, union and pushing the limits. A film made by a tight-knit group about an unlikely community, in which the director films his lover, friends and children.

Philippe Garrel is a French director and actor. He received the Prix Jean-Vigo for THE SECRET CHILD in 1982. He was twice awarded at the Venice Film Festival by the Silver Lion for best director, in 1991 for I DON'T HEAR THE GUITAR ANYMORE and in 2005 for REGULAR LOVERS, for which he also received the Prix Louis-Delluc. His films often relate to the youth of the 60’s protest, to which he belonged.
His film LOVER FOR A DAY (2017) was selected at the Directors' Fortnight at the 70th Cannes Film Festival.
