2019 Edition

Since it was first launched, ARTE has always championed a shared foundation of European cultural values by placing imagination and pluralism at the heart of its project. This European ideal pervades all its programmes and, thanks to digital technology, the channel is now able to share it with more and more Europeans. A genuine cultural policy cannot be the sole preserve of “those in the know”; it only makes sense if it is open to everyone, especially those who have no access to culture or may feel excluded. This is why ARTE is keen to address audiences where they are most likely to be found – on digital networks.

The ArteKino festival, launched in 2016, is symbolic of ARTE’s ambition to promote the riches of European arthouse cinema and share them with as many people as possible. For its fourth edition, the ArteKino Festival will present a selection of 10 European films by young directors, freely available in 10 languages in 45 European countries. We aim to forge a new connection between the works, their authors and a wide audience that is curious to discover a new, relevant approach to some very contemporary themes and concerns. In a rapidly changing landscape, these films, dramas and documentaries provide an update on the world in which we live, while deciphering our relationship to history.

The ten feature films, including seven first films, all tell in their own way of ten countries, ten languages and ten cultures. They confirm the great diversity of Europe, united but rich in its differences, resisting the temptation to retreat into our national identities. Both witnesses and actors for their times, five male and five female directors extol the benefits of dialogue and bringing people together, blending cultures and otherness across borders. The festival was set up by the ArteKino Foundation with support from Creative Europe-MEDIA and private sponsors. The ArteKino Foundation also supports feature film projects through the “ArteKino International Prize”, a development grant awarded at a dozen major film festivals. Thanks to “ArteKino Selection”, a film or film series is now available every month for free on ARTE’s three digital cinema offerings: artekinofestival.com, arte.tv and the ARTE Cinéma YouTube channel.
